The Kenya Editors’ Guild on Wednesday welcomed the decision by President Kibaki directing the Attorney-General and Information minister to study amendments proposed by the media industry to the controversial Kenya Communication (Amendment) Act.

The editors said President Kibaki had acknowledged the legitimacy of complaints by the forum and other media stakeholders over the retrogressive law.

“In light of the very positive gesture from the President, the Kenya Editors’ Guild has revised its earlier position rejecting the stakeholders forum convened by the Information minister.

“We will, therefore, attend the meeting on Wednesday and look forward to engaging the Attorney-General and the minister to hasten the legislative process that will remove contentious provisions,” the statement said.

The Guild said it had suspended further action on the contentious legislation.
