4 MPs blame police over coffee theft

Four Nyeri MPs have accused the police of complacency in the increasing cases of coffee theft.

They lamented that some of the factories that were been broken into neighbour police stations yet the officers did nothing as the thieves loaded the produce into lorries.

Over 350 bags of coffee have stolen from factories within one month.

They also accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and police boss Joseph Boinett of not doing enough to end the theft.

Mukurwe-ini’s Kabando wa Kabando lamented that officials of the affected factories and companies contracted to provide security have been unable to explain the theft.

He, however, said he Mr Nkaissery and Mr Boinett have promised to put an end to the vice.

Mathira MP Peter Weru claimed well-known people are involved in theft of coffee.

Othaya MP Mary Wambui asked the police to dismantle coffee cartels to reduce theft.

“The police should find out where stolen coffee is taken,” she said adding the coffee theft will be the first agenda to be presented to President Uhuru Kenyatta when he visits the county.
