56 bodies still at scene of attack

Bodies of the 56 people killed in Nadome have not been removed from the scene of the attack, almost five days after the raid.

As a result, a humanitarian crisis looms in the troubled village, which is on the border of Turkana East and Tiaty sub-counties.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Osman Warfa, who was to receive Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery at Chemolingot in Tiaty Sub-County yesterday, said authorities were preparing to transport the bodies.

He also said the disarmament operation in the North Rift ordered by Mr Nkaissery on Wednesday was on course but could not be “a one-day affair as we have to make some proper arrangements”.

Meanwhile, there is a confusion over the number of the people killed during the Monday dawn attack.

Red Cross personnel and a chief said 54 people were killed, but police said they found only 10 bodies.

The Red Cross figure was corroborated by the Nation team at the scene. Police bosses have now asked and Silale ward representative Nelson Lotela to show them more bodies.

The Red Cross team also said it evacuated five injured villagers.

More than 200 people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance following the attack, according to the aid agency.

It is estimated that there are more than 200,000 illegal firearms in the banditry-prone counties in the North Rift.
