Echo Network Africa, formerly known as Kenya Women Holding, has set up a kitty to finance women running for leadership posts.

Executive Director Jennifer Riria said the step will help bridge the gender gap.

"The Democracy Trust Fund will identify, prepare and position women for leadership in a strategic and sustainable manner. It will also help create a more inclusive environment in which all citizens, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to participate in national development," Dr Riria said yesterday.

The scheme mainly targets the youth, persons with disabilities and those living in rural areas.

She also urged other interest groups to facilitate the growth of women in various industries.

Beneficiaries will be expected to build their own resource base through a guided savings model, as well as mentor others.

"The programme hopes to develop a pool of highly skilled cadre of women leaders capable of participating in national leadership and bringing positive change to the society, and to their leadership spaces in particular," she said. It will be launched on Wednesday.
