Police in Vihiga are holding an assistant chief to help in investigating reports that she allegedly commanded a group of people to assault a 47-year-old resident of Bunandi on Wednesday evening.
According to the police, the Bunandi sub location assistant chief led a group of four youths to assault Kefa Magomere at his house, leading to his death.
“We arrested her on charges of causing physical injuries leading to murder. The four youths she was with are still at large,” county police commander Sarah Duncan said.
She said the deceased had allegedly insulted his wife, who reported the matter to the assistant chief.
Ms Duncan said the assistant chief got annoyed by the alleged acts of assault by the deceased on his wife.
The police commander noted that investigations are underway with a view to arresting the four youths who worked on the assistant chief's orders.
“After they assaulted him, the left him alone in his house. He had sustained deep injuries on his body and was later found dead,” Ms Duncan said.
She added: "We will give a full report once we are through with our investigations. When the four youths heard that we have arrested the assistant chief, they ran away and we are yet to arrest them."
Ms Duncan said the assistant chief will remain in custody at Vihiga police station.
"She is newly employed and was yet to settle on her new job. She ought to have sought advise on how to handle the matter of assault that had been reported to her. The action she took was not advisable," said Ms Duncan.
