Chief Justice David Maraga has received books worth Sh159 million from a World Bank funded project.

The books, including Law reports, law dictionaries and assorted law text books, will be distributed to judges, magistrates and court libraries across the country.

Mr Maraga said he was grateful since the books were being handed at a time judges and magistrates are readying themselves to hear election petitions.

The project, known as the Judicial Performance Improvement Project (JPIP), was initiated in 2006 and it aims at improving the performance of the Judiciary in key areas such as court administration and case management systems and processes.

Mr Maraga said the books would help judicial officers get quick reference and deliver rulings and judgments faster.

He said he was happy the project was also assisting the construction of courts across the country.

Some 30 courts will benefit from the books.

Ms Nancy Karanja, the project coordinator, said the books were the largest single donation ever given to an institution in Kenya.

She said the legal information would help in accessing of justice.

Present during the occasion were Court of Appeal judge Otieno Odek, who is also the chairman of the Judiciary’s library committee and the director of Judiciary Training Institute and Mr Richard Mwongo, the principal judge of the High Court.
