The electoral commission on Monday dismissed claims that its chairman Wafula Chebukati had agreed to step down as “fake”.

Tabitha Mutemi, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) manager in charge of communications and corporate affairs, said the letter dated April 23 and bearing the commission’s logo is not authentic and did not originate from the electoral body.

Ms Mutemi said the notice was shared on Twitter by several unverified accounts.

Last week, Mr Chebukati vowed to stay put after three commissioners resigned from the electoral agency. He said the commission as currently constituted is rightfully in place.

The embattled electoral commission boss has been warding off pressure from some quarters demanding for his exit, asking those who have issues with his team to follow the law to remove them from office.
