Cotu boss Atwoli fears for his life

What you need to know:

  • Mr Atwoli insisted that the government had taken up the matter.

Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu-K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has claimed his life is in danger.

Speaking at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu on Saturday, Mr Atwoli said he had received information that some politicians have hired hitmen.

According to the trade unionist, the threats are as a result of his continued remarks on matters concerning the "good" of the country.

"There is a threat. Some few individuals, either in leadership or politicians, have hired four hit men to eliminate me within a week.

"The threats are in relation to what I always say. I have said anything I feel is not good for this nation without fear or favour and it has not gone down well with some politicians who met somewhere to plan my killing.

"I have already shared it with the government and got assurance of protection," he said.

POLICE

Mr Atwoli did not reveal which police station he had recorded a statement, insisting that the government had taken up the matter.

Police spokesperson Charles Owino however said he is not aware of such a claim.

"From where I sit, I am not aware of any report of threat regarding Mr Atwoli. I will contact him for clarification," he said on phone.

He went on: "The government is big and it is not easy to know who in the government is aware of the reports by the official."
