What you need to know:

  • The results of three other officers - Kingori Mwangi (Police Reforms), Gideon Kimilu (CID Headquarters) and Peter Pamba (Security of Government Building Unit) - had not been finalised
  • All the officers who were vetted were of the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP)

Two senior police officers have been found to be unsuitable after undergoing vetting, while 18 were declared suitable.

National Police Service Commission chairman Johnstone Kavuludi, while releasing the vetting results on Friday, revealed that Eusebius Laibuta (AP Senior Staff College) and Philip Tuimur (Police Headquarters) were unsuitable.

Mr Kavuludi said the results of three other officers - Kingori Mwangi (Police Reforms), Gideon Kimilu (CID Headquarters) and Peter Pamba (Security of Government Building Unit) - had not been finalised and the commission needed to conduct further investigations after which they would be recalled for further interviews.

The officers who were vetted were of the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP).

The vetting, which ended last week, brought to light the infighting, corruption and nepotism bedevilling the service, as well as exposing the hitherto unknown character of most of the senior officers. (READ: Vetting of top officers exposes high levels of graft and opulence in force)

Mr Laibuta provided one of the most memorable moments of the exercise when he pleaded with the vetting panel not to retire officers from the police service, saying such an action could kill some of them.

“I personally appeal to you not to spell doom on us by taking away our jobs, because if you do so, you may find some of us on the obituary pages of newspapers,” Mr Laibuta told the panel. (READ: I’m not the King’ori in real estate business)
