5 charged over plot to leak KCSE papers at Koyonzo Secondary

Five suspects were on Wednesday arraigned in  a Mumias court over alleged irregularities in the just-concluded Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Appearing before Mumias magistrate Charity Kipkorir, the suspects, who were arrested at Koyonzo secondary School in Matungu sub-county, denied the charges.

CONSPIRING

Four of the suspects – Bonventure Makokha Ouma (center manager), Bernard Shikuku Nanjira (Supervisor), Eunice Oluoch and Okura Juma (invigilators) – faced two charges of jointly conspiring to commit a misdemeanour of passing information to candidates sitting the French exam paper 501/1.

In the second account, they are jointly accused of aiding and abetment contrary to the Kenya National Examination Council Act 29 of 2012.

The first accused, Mr Kenneth Oloo Onyango, was accused of unlawfully possessing examination information contrary to the KNEC Act.

“The accused, face two charges of being in possession of examination material and aiding and abetting crime contrary to the Kenya National Examination Council Act while the fifth accused also faces a charge of unlawfully being found in exam room and in possession of examination information contrary to requirements of the KNEC,” said prosecutor Maurine Kibet.

They denied the charges and were granted cash bail of Sh50,000 or a bond of Sh100,000 each with surety of the same amount.

EVIDENCE

The first accused, Mr Onyango, teaches French at the school.

The magistrate directed the prosecution to supply documentary evidence that will be used in the case to defence lawyer Anase Momanyi.

The case will be heard on February 29, 2019.
