Ideal Christmas gift for Kenyans is money, says report

Nearly half of Kenyans would like to receive any type of gift for Christmas, while most Kenyans who know what they specifically want would like to be given money, a new survey by Consumer Insight shows.

The study, Festive Season Polls Report, says 47 per cent of Kenyans would like to receive anything in the upcoming holiday.

Forty-eight per cent of the males surveyed, and 45 per cent of the females, said they desired anything.

This was said by 53 per cent of the respondents who are 45 years old and above.

In a similar survey by Consumer Insight in 2013, most Kenyans — 24 per cent — said they would like money, while 16 per cent said they would like anything.

CHRISTMAS ATTITUDES

The Festive Season Polls Report was commissioned by the Nation Media Group to find out the attitudes of Kenyans towards, and plans for, the festive season, to inform newspaper content on this subject. Five hundred and sixty participants took part this year.

According to this year’s study, Kenyans would like a number of gifts for the upcoming holiday.

For 19 per cent of the respondents, their ideal gift is money.

Five per cent said they would like a gift voucher or shopping. A similar percentage of those interviewed said they would like a mobile phone

CARS OR MOTORCYCLES

Electronics were another favourite gift in terms of preference. Four per cent said it would be their ideal Christmas gift.

The same percentage of people would prefer to get cars or motorcycles.

Three per cent of people interviewed said they wanted clothes or shoes.

At the bottom of the list are laptops or computers, goats or cows, school fees and foodstuff.

The percentage of people who said they would be their Christmas gifts of choice was two for each item.

Festive Season Polls Report also looked at aspects of the Christmas season that Kenyans find enjoyable.

More than half of the study’s participants said the joy of Christmas for them comes from meeting with relatives.

This was said by 70 per cent of the respondents — 71 per cent of males and 68 per cent of females. Out of these, 79 per cent of respondents were between 18 and 24 years old.

In the 2013 report, 42 per cent said meeting with relatives brought them joy.

The second-most-popular aspect in this year’s report, said by 42 per cent of the respondents, is meeting with friends.

This is followed by eating – at 32 per cent and drinking at 26 per cent. For 27 per cent of participants, travelling to their rural home brings them delight.
