What you need to know:

  • Mr Matiang’i dismissed the demand, saying compensating residents would amount to judging the officers and making them culpable for all the losses incurred in the region.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Tiaty MP William Kamket have clashed over compensation of Baringo residents who lost their livestock last year during a security operation.

Mr Kamket demanded that the residents be compensated, accusing security officers of killing livestock instead of restoring peace in the region.

He claimed that the officers killed 6,000 livestock, condemning residents to abject poverty since they solely depend on the animals for their livelihoods.

COMPENSATION

However, Mr Matiang’i dismissed the demand, saying compensating residents would amount to judging the officers and making them culpable for all the losses incurred in the region.

Appearing before the National Assembly committee on administration and national security, the CS denied that the officers killed livestock, but promised he would investigate the MP’s claims.

SECURITY OFFICERS

“The information I have so far is that no livestock was lost in the hands of our security officers, but that does not mean that I am trashing the issues raised by the area MP. We will investigate and come back to you with a comprehensive answer,” Mr Matiang’i said.

“These were deaths that happened as a result of conflict, we as well lost our security officers and the issue of compensation does not therefore arise as doing so will be judging the government,” he added.
