Yesterday’s golden jubilee celebration in Nairobi was a stylish event attended by 14 heads of states and several foreign guests.

It ignited memories of 50 years ago in 1963 when Kenya became independent under the leadership of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s father.

Music helped the older and younger generations come to terms with their history and present.

Artists from both generations, including comedians drawn from local and foreign states thrilled the crowd.

Like his father did in 1963 President Kenyatta delivered the keynote address at the occasion with several historical echoes.

Kenya’s former coloniser, the United Kingdom was represented at the event by the Minister for Africa Mr Mark Simmonds.

AIDE BARRED

Security was tight and several aides escorting dignitaries including the presidents were barred from the main dais or forced to identify themselves in a ruthless style that left some invited delegates embarrassed.

At one point President Museveni had to intervene after his daughter who was part of his delegation was blocked at the security check just after he was ushered in.

He turned back and grabbed her arms and pulled her out past the inquisitive security guards through to the VIP area.

Some 16 senators acted as escorts of honour guiding the visiting heads of states as they drove to the function.

Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed’s handbag became a security concern at the Presidential dais after it was left unattended as the minister ushered in the visiting guests.

The hawk eyed security chiefs, unaware the bag belonged to the minister, made a public announcement that caused anxiety.

“Someone has left a brown bag at the dais. If you don’t come for it in five minutes we will destroy it,” announced Mr Sammy Lui, an MCs.

He later had to apologise.

CROWD CHEERED

Fifty top of the range cars were used to chauffeur leaders to the venue.

The crowd cheered every time the arrival of a head of state was announced.

But former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka arrived unannounced and despite their prominent first row positions at the dais they were only first mentioned by President Jonathan: “I am happy that I can see my brother Raila Odinga and Stephen Musyoka,” the Nigerian President said.

The two were later formally recognized towards the end of the event by Deputy President William Ruto.

The VIPs broke into a dance when the choir of the disciplined forces took to the stage under the leadership of gospel musician Rufftone.

Retired President Moi was not present but comedian Walter Mongare known for mimicking him ensured Kenyans did not miss him.
