The team tasked with implementing the March 9 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga has postponed its planned public forum in Machakos and Kitui counties. The Building Bridges to Unity Taskforce which is chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji and deputised by University of Nairobi don Adams Oloo said that the postponement was to allow further consultations.
The team said that local leaders had complained over the short notice, venues, and representation during the meetings.
The meetings had been planned for Tuesday, October 23, in Machakos, and Kitui the following day.
The other meetings, the team said, will go on as planned.
On October 30, the handshake team will be in Meru before heading to Isiolo the next day, and ending up at Rumuruti in Laikipia County on November 2 to cover the upper eastern region.
The Coast will have their date with the team on November 6 in Malindi, and the next day in Mombasa.
“Specific dates for the other regions shall be communicated in due course. In the meantime, the taskforce wishes to inform the public that its programs shall be all inclusive and among other avenues shall include consultations with both political and civil class,” a statement by Mr Haji and Dr Oloo said on Saturday last week.
