A herder was shot dead in an attack on a Turkana village by cattle thieves.
The more than 500 bandits struck Kotopae Hills in Lobei village shortly after residents returned from the grazing fields.
The villagers engaged the raiders in a shoot out and killed one of them, while others sustained serious injuries.
Loima district police boss Michael Muchiri confirmed that Mr Lokalio Aiton, 24, was shot dead and more than 2,000 sheep and goats stolen.
The seriously injured are being treated at Lodwar District and Referral Hospital while those with bruises were treated at local dispensaries and discharged.
“A combined team of GSU, Kenya police reservists, regular and Administration Police pursued the raiders and have so far recovered 200 animals,” said Mr Muchiri.
Police are pursuing the raiders who headed towards Pokot North District.
Cattle rustling is rampant among Kenya’s Turkana and Pokot and Uganda’s Tepesi and Karamajong pastoralists.
Turkana herders last week stole cattle from Uganda but chiefs responded quickly and led security team up to Lokiriama village in Loima District and recovered their animals.
