What you need to know:

  • Ms Wambui said she is letting God deal with her accusers, adding that any move to link her to the illegal trade was political and meant to tarnish her name.
  • All the people named in Parliament by Prof Saitoti have always insisted the report was biased and have continued to deny the accusations.

Othaya MP Mary Wambui has said she is not involved in drug trafficking and “knows nothing about such matters”.

Ms Wambui, who had been mentioned in a report tabled in Parliament by then Internal Security minister George Saitoti said she has nothing to say about the matter as she is a born-again Christian.

Kazi yangu nikufanya maendeleo muniulize ile pesa napataia watu ya CDF, mambo ingine sina,” (My work is to steer development so ask me about CDF funds, I don’t know about such things,” she said.

Ms Wambui was responding to questions from journalists at Kagicha trading centre in Othaya where she had made a stopover to urge residents to register as voters.

The MP, who is seeking re-election, also disbursed CDF cheques worth Sh22.6 million for projects in the constituency.

Ms Wambui said she is letting God deal with her accusers, adding that any move to link her to the illegal trade was political and meant to tarnish her name.

“I won’t answer more questions regarding this topic! Please ask other questions,” she said.

Ms Wambui’s reaction comes barely a week after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government announced it will crack down on drug barons, including politicians linked to the trade.

Last week, Mr Kenyatta while touring the Coast region, declared that it was end of the road for drug traffickers following the arrest and extradition of the Akasha brothers.

The President said no one found in the cartel will be spared this time round.

Other politicians who were listed in the report tabled in Parliament include Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo, former assistant minister Harun Mwau and former Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua.

All the people named in Parliament by Prof Saitoti have always insisted the report was biased and have continued to deny the accusations.
