Leading Indian medicine lecturers to join Mt Kenya University

Mount Kenya University has tapped the service of two leading medicine lecturers from India to strengthen its medicine school.

Dr Alpana Kulkarni and Dr Pradeep Kulkarni, both specialists in pharmacy and physiology, are set to join the university in May 2016.

“We have sought their service and experience to strengthen our schools of medicine and pharmacy. These are top notch lecturers that this institutions requires,” said Mr Gicharu.

The University is among 10 institutions offering medical and dentistry courses in the country that have been cleared by the East Africa medical boards and councils to continue with their training.

However, East Africa medical boards and councils in its report asked Mount Kenya University to put in place a staff development programme in the next six months.

The council also praised the institution for its public private partnership initiative which has seen it put up a Sh300 million anatomy facility at Thika Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County.

BUILDING SH600M BLOCK

The University has embarked on the construction of an ultra-modern Sh600 million facility to accommodate the teaching and administrative personnel.

The inspection was conducted in the country from January 16 to 22 and those involved included included Prof David Ngassapa, vice-chair, Tanganyika medical council, Prof Magoha, Prof Joel Okullo, chairman Uganda medical and dental council, Dr Emmanuel Rudakemwa , registrar Rwanda medical council , Prof Gordien Ngendakuriyo chairman of the board , Burundi medical council and Dr Jamala Adam Taib chairman Zanzibar medical council.

The objective of the inspection was to ascertain whether the universities and their teaching hospitals are complying with the minimum standards and guidelines as approved by the East Africa Community boards and councils to successfully train competent medical practitioners and dentist.

The report will be tabled at the 12th ordinary meeting of the EAC sectorial council of ministers for consideration and adoption.

The report has also proposed that the coordinating committee request the ministers of health to direct the respective institutions to implement the recommendations within the specified timelines.
