Journalists win 11 per cent pay increase

  • The journalists will also get a 12 per cent salary increase from April next year

Unionisable Nation and Standard journalists will now enjoy a salary increment of 11 per cent.

This follows signing of a collective bargaining agreement at Stanley Hotel in Nairobi on Wednesday during a meeting attended by the management of Nation Media Group and Standard Group, and officials of the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ).

Nation editorial administration manager David Aduda and KUJ chairman Oscar Obonyo said the agreement was signed following a series of meetings between the management and union officials.

WORKING CONDITIONS

“The agreement will remain in force for two years,” said Mr Aduda.

During the ceremony, NMG was represented by human resources director David Kiambi, legal officer Sekou Owino and Mr Aduda.

Human resources director Pauline Kiraithie, legal officer Eric Kivuva and editorial manager Andy Kagwe attended the function on behalf of the Standard.

Ms Kiraithe said: “The management of the two media organisations are pro-union, whose aim is to improve the working conditions of journalists.”

Mr Kiambi said there was need to maintain harmony at the workplace by recognising the role of the union.

In the new agreement, employees going on annual leave shall be entitled to Sh11,076 for the first year and Sh12,738 for the second year.
