Judges have gathered in Mombasa for their annual conference to discuss a wide range of issues including resolving electoral disputes.

Judges from the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Employment and Labour Relations Court and Environment and Land Court are attending the week-long Annual Colloquium at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort in Mombasa.

The theme of the meeting is “Introspection and Sharing Experiences: Sustaining Judicial Transformation in a Digital Environment and Electioneering Period”.

The forum will give Chief Justice David Maraga an opportunity to share with judges some of his expectations.

CORRUPTION

The independence of the Judiciary and corruption that the institution has been grappling with are expected to be raised by various speakers.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Isaack Okero and other senior officials are expected to attend and address the judges.

The conference, organised by the Judiciary Training Institute, will be officially opened by the Chief Justice on Tuesday.

A statement from the Judiciary communication department indicated that the judges will deliberate on key issues, among them recent legislative amendments related to resolving electoral disputes and handling election petitions in courts and election technology law.

“Other topics will be emerging jurisprudence on reproductive human rights, transgender and intersex issues, litigating hate speech, admissibility of digital evidence and emerging issues on extradition and human trafficking,” added the statement.

Judges will also discuss hear presentations on the electronic filing (e-filing) of cases and electronic case management, among others.

They will also be discussing service delivery in the Judiciary under the broad theme of sustaining Judiciary transformation in line with the blueprint launched by Justice Maraga in January.

The conference will kick off today (Monday), with Justice Otieno Odek taking participants through objectives and the theme of the colloquium before a welcome remark from Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi.
