Kenya is set to be the first African Country to host the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) after the government talked Gambia out of bidding.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said he received a call on Wednesday night that Gambia had dropped its bid to host the conference leaving Kenya as the only contender.

“I sent my deputy (William Ruto) to negotiate with Gambia and they have agreed to let Kenya host the conference and what we are waiting for is the official confirmation by the Japanese Government,” he said.

President Kenyatta was speaking at the Kenya-Japan Infrastructure Conference in Nairobi on Thursday attended by Japanese and Kenyan investors.

Over 50 Kenyan firms and 30 Japanese companies attended the conference.

The TICAD summit is held every five years to promote high level policy dialogue between African leaders and development partners.

The next summit will be held in next year.
