Kenya to host three-day Great Lakes Region justice meeting

Kenya will be host to eight ministers of justice and attorneys general from the Great Lakes Region attending a three-day conference on justice and good governance.

The three day high-level regional conference will be reviewing progress, challenges and take steps concerning the fight against impunity and the administration of justice within the region.

The conference themed “Combating Impunity and Upholding Human Rights as Key Contributions to Peace and Security” will be officiated by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.

A statement from State Law Office said the outcome of the conference will be a declaration on how to strengthen the capacity of the countries of the region to fight impunity and reinforce the rule of law.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Kenya’s Attorney General Kihara Kariuki will give a keynote address on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The meeting is organised by the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) with the support of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region (O/SESGGL) as well as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The ICGLR is an inter-governmental organisation of countries in the African Great Lakes Region whose objective is to promote sustainable peace and development.

MEMBERS

The member states include Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.

“ICGLR recognises that combating impunity and upholding human rights remain integral for peace and security in the Great Lakes Region. ICGLR believes that concrete action endorsed at the highest political level, is required to advance the fight against impunity and promote human rights and justice,” a statement from the AG’s office said.
