What you need to know:

  • The explosion at the train station, which is a few metres from the EU premises, happened about an hour after the airport had been attacked.
  • At least 34 people were killed in both incidents with more than 200 wounded.

A Kenyan working in Brussels has recounted the chaos that ensued after a series of deadly attacks in the Belgian City yesterday.

Mr Daniel Muturi, who worked at the Zaventem Airport, reported to work as usual, but the orderly operations at the facility were disrupted with explosions.

“I was in a building adjacent to the departure hall. First of all, there was a small explosion, and then seconds later, a bigger explosion,” he told NTV on phone from Brussels.

“According to confirmed information, the small explosion was a suicide bomber but the main one came from a bag that had been abandoned at the airport.”

DOUBLE TRAGEDY

Brussels, the headquarters of the European Union, witnessed a series of deadly attacks on both the airport and the subway station in the middle of the city.

The explosion at the train station, which is a few metres from the EU premises, happened about an hour and 20 minutes after the airport had been attacked.

At least 34 people were killed in both incidents with more than 200 wounded.

“After the explosion at the airport, people were running all over the place, because they were suspecting it was a Paris kind of attack. They were coming all over to the parking places, looking for safety,” Mr Muturi said.

The attack occurred four days after the capture of Europe’s most wanted terror suspect, Salah Abdeslam.

Abdeslam was wanted for the murder of 130 people last year in November in Paris.

Authorities believed he was the sole survivor of of the 10 men who had a direct hand in the Paris incident.
