Kisumu escapee murder convict Martha Nyagol says she's sorry

What you need to know:

  • Nyagol had been on bond since the trial began but Justice David Majanja cancelled it on Wednesday after she was found guilty.

  • She was to remain in custody awaiting sentencing on April 11.

The woman who escaped from the court chambers in Kisumu moments after she was found guilty of murder presented herself to the same judge on Thursday.

Martha Auma Nyagol, a P1 trained teacher from Kabondo in Sondu, had been found guilty of strangling her husband Jared Ochieng on May 27, 2014.

VANISHED

But as the judge delivered the judgment, Nyagol mysteriously vanished from the courtroom, taking advantage of a security lapse.

On Thursday, Ms Nyagol, wearing a black jacket a light blue flowery dress, returned to the chambers with her elder sister Lillian Ajwang and appeared before Justice David Majanja.

She told the judge that she was sorry for her conduct and begged for forgiveness.

Her lawyer, Stephen Odumbe, said his client was not aware that she was supposed to remain in custody until her sentencing.

“She never intended to walk out or disobey this honourable court,” Mr Odumbe said.

OFFICER

“She has never absconded any court proceedings and she is very much apologetic for this incident.”

Nyagol had been out on bond since the trial began but Justice David Majanja cancelled it on Wednesday after she was found guilty.

She was to remain in custody awaiting sentencing on April 11.

On Thursday, the judge did not mete further penalties out after noting she was a laywoman who may have been misled by the security officer.

But the judge reprimanded the security officer, a corporal, who was on duty on Wednesday morning.

The judge directed that disciplinary action be taken on her for sleeping on the job.
