Kenya, Tanzania to manage Mara River ecosystem

Kenya and Tanzania will jointly manage the Mara River ecosystem once a memorandum of understanding between the two states is signed at the end of the year.

The MoU is aimed at ensuring sustainable management of human life and wildlife as well conservation of the environment.

Deputy President William Ruto confirmed Kenya’s commitment to partner with Tanzania.

“We will form a joint management team,” Mr Ruto said during the 3rd Mara Day celebrations in Narok.

This year’s theme, Mara Forever, Mara Milele, coincides with the great annual wildebeest migration of 2 million animals from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Maasai Mara National Game Reserve.

The migration started in July and ends in October.

RAISE AWARENESS

Kenya hosted the first celebrations in Mulot and Tanzania, the second in Mugumu last year.

The event is used to raise awareness on environmental and social challenges facing the ecosystem.

Both countries share the Mara River, which is a lifeline for wildlife in the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve and Serengeti National Park.

“This is part of efforts by states and non-state actors as a critical step towards sustainable trans-boundary natural resource management, which is a contribution to the EAC integration agenda,” Mr Ruto said.

The government plans to end settlement in Mau Forest, a source of Mara River water.
