An elderly woman in Kisii County was lynched by a mob who accused her of causing her grandson’s death.

The 68-year-old woman identified as Anastancia Kemunto is said to have gone to a witchdoctor after she realised that her avocados had been stolen.

Maxwell’s father, John Miruka, said Ms Kemunto, who is his mother, had vowed to kill the boy for taking the fruits without her consent.

The Standard Six pupil died on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Ruara Hospital. Residents cornered the grandmother later that day and burnt her alive in Bokoma, Bonchari Constituency.

INTERNAL BLEEDING

Mr Miruka said his son had been complaining of head and chest pains.

“I took my son to hospital at around 7am after he came from school while bleeding and unfortunately he passed on,” he said.

He said he was informed villagers attacked Ms Kemunto at 10am after learning of the boy’s death.

According to doctors at the hospital, Maxwell had internal bleeding that may have resulted from a heavy blow.

Kisii South police boss David Mburukwa said they were investigating the matter.
