  • Reckless behaviour on the roads led to the deaths of 392 people during the Easter and Christmas festivities last year, NTSA official says.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged motorists to be extra careful on the roads during the Easter holiday.

Senior deputy director of communications for the authority Dido Guyatu said many Kenyans are travelling for the holidays and they should keenly follow traffic regulations to avoid accidents.

CAUTION

Motorists are encouraged to be patient, extra vigilant and courteous to other road users.

The long Easter weekend also coincides with schools closing, leading to increased traffic on the roads.

This is also compounded with the heavy rainfall being experienced in several parts of the country, which makes driving more difficult.

“Statistics indicate that road traffic crashes tend to increase during such seasons especially at hazardous zones or blackspots.

“Ninety-one percent of crashes are attributed to human behaviour such as speeding, lane indiscipline, overloading, drunk driving and dangerous overtaking,” Ms Guyatu said in the statement on Friday.

SAFETY

She said reckless behaviour led to the deaths of 392 people during the Easter and Christmas festivities last year.

Motorists have also been asked to plan their travel itineraries in advance to avoid a last-minute rush, which leads to speeding and could cause accidents.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility and we must all work together to deal with this challenge. Let us all be responsible road users and look forward to a safe Easter Holiday,” Ms Guyatu said.
