Kenyan policeman killed in clash with Oromo rebels

A police officer was shot dead and two others seriously injured by Oromo Liberation Front rebels during an operation to flush out the Ethiopian rebels from northern Kenya.

The officers drove into a trap laid by the rebels at a remote location on the borders between Sololo and Wajir North districts.

A fire exchange ensued between the two forces before the officer was felled. After the attacks, the rebels escaped into a bush abandoning their firearms which included two bazookas, more than 500 rounds of ammunition and several grenades.

Tension high

The rebels were believed to have been injured in the battle since blood stains were spotted around the scene.

Tension remained high in Moyale and Sololo towns as operation to flush out the rebels from northern Kenya continued.
Police are holding some rebels captured during the operation to help with investigations.

Eastern provincial police boss Marcus Ochola told the Nation on phone from Embu that the injured had been airlifted to a Nairobi hospital for specialised treatment.
