The United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) has a new vice-chancellor.

The university’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday announced the appointment of Dr Paul Tiyambe Zeleza as the next vice-chancellor, with effect from January 1 next year.

Dr Zeleza will take over from Prof Freida Brown, who will retire at the end of the year after serving the university for the past 21 years.

The university’s chancellor, Dr Manu Chandaria, said the institution is committed to helping Dr Zeleza succeed.

“This success will mean fulfilment of USIU-Africa’s promise to be a transformative institution in Kenya and the region,” he said.

Dr Zeleza is the vice-president of academic affairs and a professor of history at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, in the United States.

He joined Quinnipiac after serving as dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts as well as professor of history and African American studies at Loyola Marymount University.

Before that, Dr Zeleza was head of the Department of African American Studies and distinguished professor in liberal arts and sciences at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

He also taught at the Pennsylvania State University, and was director of the Centre for African Studies and professor of history and African studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr Zeleza is a Malawian national.
