It will now cost Sh1 million to register a personalised car number plate after the government published a gazette notice to regulate motor vehicle registration.

According to the gazette notice published by Infrastructure and Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau, replacing a defaced number plate will cost Sh50,000.
The minister also gazetted 47 new motor vehicle registration codes to be used by county governors.

Some governors have come up with their own registration codes with names of their counties inscribed in the number plates.

The guidelines showing the new codes to be used on vehicles registered for official use by governors is contained in the published notice.

“The number plate shall be strictly fixed on the official motor vehicle of the Governor and shall not be interchanged without prior approval of the authority,” it states.
Each of the counties has been allocated two codes from which the governor’s registration number would be generated.

In the event that the personalised registration number is transferred to another vehicle, the owner will be charged two per cent of the fees payable for personalised registration over and above the normal registration fee. Matatus, cargo trucks, ambulance and funeral hearses, diplomatic vehicles, tractors and heavy machinery qualify to get personalised numbers.

Personalities like Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, footballers Dennis Oliech and McDonald Mariga and musician Prezzo have the numbers.
