Police rescue 57 people 'illegally detained' in Eastleigh

Police on Wednesday evening rescued 57 people believed to have been unlawfully detained in Eastleigh, 21 of whom were found to be mentally challenged.

Police arrested six people, among them a Ugandan, over the illegal detainment.

RESCUE

The 57 were found in a building near Princess Zahra Islamic Centre along Muyuyu Road in Eastleigh 3rd Street.

They were taken to Mathare and Mbagathi hospitals, where the 21 were found to be mentally challenged. The 21 are admitted in hospital.

They included 52 Kenyans, two Swedish nationals of Somali origin, two Britons of Somali origin and one Canadian of Somali origin.

Officers from specialised police formations and officials of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) raided the premise at 6pm.

Those arrested during the raid include Somali refugee Abdi Hassan, 42, Abdi Kaaf Abdullahi, 33, Gideon Wesonga 41, Pamela Adhiambo, 35, and Watii Wele, a 22-year-old Ugandan.

“They claimed that they were running a rehabilitation centre but there were no records to support them,” police said.

The six are expected in court on Thursday afternoon.
