Mose Gift Osinya has won the Jubilee Insurance Samaritan Award (JISA) for his bravery in rescuing his brother Satrine after their mother was killed in a terror attack on a church in Likoni.

According to a panel of judges, Gift carried his brother through the terror incident trying to calm him down and accompanied him to hospital.

They termed the deed by the 13-year-old as admirable.

The two lost their mother, Veronica Akinyi, in the attack who was shielding Baby Satrine when the bullet tore through her body into his brain.

Satrine underwent surgery and the bullet was removed from his brain.

The Jubilee Insurance Samaritan Award (JISA) was launched in 2006 and rewards outstanding and selfless deeds carried out by humble individuals.

It encourages Kenyans to be mindful of the welfare of the less fortunate members of the society.

Gift was awarded alongside Mzee Job Tarkwen Kipkech, a Mogotio resident who has been aiding tortoises cross the busy Mogotio highway since 1958.

“Mzee Kipkech’s actions may seem like a drop in the ocean but it is worth noting that at a time when the country is grappling with the poaching menace, Kipkech has devoted his life to saving the little he can,” JISA’s Chief Judge Mr Ezekiel Mutua said.

The JISA Panel of judges include Eric Shimoli of the Nation Media Group, Francis Openda (The Star), Patrick Wachira (Mediamax Group) , Ezekiel Mutua (Ministry of Information), Hussein Muhammed (Royal Media Services) and Andy Kagwa of The Standard Group.
