President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday asked private universities to remain dedicated to increasing access to affordable higher education.
The President told the universities not be distracted by the desire to make quick profits, but rather stick to their calling to provide essential service.
“The provision of education is not a business; it is a sacred calling that typifies society’s never-ending drive to continuously improve itself,” said President Kenyatta.
He was presiding over the official opening of Zetech University Complex in Ruiru, Kiambu County. The university was started 17 years ago as a computer college.
He urged universities to be bold and innovative to contribute positively to the country’s development. “Institutions of higher learning should diversify the range of courses they offer beyond the traditional mainstays to tap into the innovation age,” advised the President.
He noted that innovation will enable the youth to take full advantage of all the opportunities offered by the world.
Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi urged universities to carry out research and share the finding with policy makers.
