President Uhuru Kenyatta left the country for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to attend a special summit convened to seek solutions to the Burundi crisis.

The Extra Ordinary Summit of Heads of State was convened by East Africa Community chairman President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania.

The unrest was sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a third five-year term.

The President was seen off at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by the Chief of Defense Forces Samson Mwathethe and other senior government officials.

President Kenyatta's plane touched down at the Julius Nyerere International Airport shortly after 11am Wednesday.

The regional Foreign Ministers on Tuesday evening held a lengthy meeting that went on until late in the night, discussing the Burundi issue.

President Kenyatta had on Saturday urged the parties to the pre-election dispute to open up for dialogue as the only way to end the political impasse.

The President spoke when the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa Committee of Elders chaired by Bethuel Kiplagat and EAC Eminent Persons paid him a courtesy call at State House, Nairobi.

He said the continued unrest in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, was not only a threat to the country’s stability but the East African region.
