Bush's death comes just eight months after the passing of his wife and first lady Barbara Bush, to whom he was married for 73 years.
The former American president navigated the United States through the largely peaceful fall of their arch rival the Soviet Union in 1989 and defeated Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein two years later when he invaded Kuwait.
