At least six people were killed in an accident involving a pickup truck and a minibus in the Muraka area on the Kakamega-Kisumu road on Tuesday.
Thirty-five people were injured in the 11am accident and were rushed to a Kakamega hospital.
The pickup was transporting about 20 mourners and a casket bearing a body when it collided with the 30-seater van.
The driver of the pickup was attempting to overtake a saloon car on a bend near a bridge, Western Region traffic commander Evans Gatembe said.
The passengers on the pickup were flung into a ditch.
Rescue efforts by the fire brigade, the Red Cross, St John’s ambulance, the police and residents were under way.
The accident caused a huge snarl-up on the Kakamega-Kisumu road.
