The Ministry of Education has instructed its regional coordinators and county directors to conduct an assessment of the impact of the rains on schools ahead of opening on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed wants the assessment done on primary and secondary schools, vocational training centres and public universities.

“Particularly, the officers should advise the ministry on areas where the rains may drastically affect the opening of schools or the learning process in the higher education sector with a view to forestalling any crisis,” she said.

Following heavy downpours, several families have been displaced and several schools are flooded.

The CS said the rains have affected infrastructure in many parts of the country including access to schools.

“I also urge the public to be vigilant and take proper care of our young ones who are also our greatest resource,” she said.

She spoke on Thursday at her Jogoo House office in Nairobi.
