President Uhuru Kenyatta says he’s determined to provide a laptop to each Standard One pupil.

The President, who spoke at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi during the 52nd Madaraka Day celebrations, said the school electrification programme, which will see every primary school connected to electricity, will be complete in a few months.

“It will also enable our pupils to receive and make use of the laptops we promised as part of our transformation programme,” said Mr Kenyatta.

Last month, Mr Kenyatta moved the project from the ministry of Education to Information and Communications Technology, roping in other ministries to help in carrying out the project.

He has also asked the ministry of Education to ensure it provides a laptop to each of the 21,000 schools while ensuring 6,000 teachers are trained on ICT.

The ministry is supposed to provide 400,000 pupils with laptops this financial year.

Implementation of the project will start next month and conclude in the 2016/17 financial year. It targets 11,078 primary schools in each year.
