  • Former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko also thanked the President for giving him the honour to serve the country as a Cabinet Secretary.

The Council of Governors has welcomed the appointment of former governors Peter Munya and Ukur Yattani to the Cabinet, saying this will deepen the relationship between the two levels of government.

Mr Munya was appointed CS in charge of East African Community and Northern Corridor Development.

CoG chairman Josphat Nanok said the appointment of the former Meru and Marsabit governors will ensure  devolution takes root.

“On behalf of the Council of Governors and the 47 county governments, I congratulate you all on your  nomination and look forward to working with you to ensure devolution remains the vehicle that delivers the people’s aspirations,” Mr Nanok said.

He also welcomed the appointment of other former governors Hussein Dado and Simon Kachapin  as chief administrative secretaries.

The former governors now join their former Nakuru colleague Kinuthia Mbugua who was appointed as State House comptroller in the executive.

POLITICAL RIVAL

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has also welcomed the appointment of his predecessor and former political rival.

“I am personally happy the President has kept his promise. The President persuaded Mr Munya  to withdraw the election petition against me with a promise to give him a national position so that I am left to work as a governor of Meru and I am very happy and congratulate him for that,” Mr Murungi said.

Mr Murungi also welcomed the appointment of Prof Margaret Kobia as CS for Public Service, Youth and Gender affairs, saying the President had balanced the two senior Cabinet appointments from the county well, between Nyambene and Imenti.

The governor also praised appointment of outgoing CS for Lands Jacob Kaimenyi as Unesco representative.

At the same time, Central Organisation of Trade Unions has hailed the President for creating a stand-alone Labour ministry.

POSITIVE IMPACT

Cotu also welcomed the choice of Mr Yattani to lead the ministry and that of Cleopa Mailu as the Head of UN Mission in Geneva.

The Mission combines its duties with those of the International Labour Organisation.

“This decision by the President to have the Labour ministry distinct is bound to have huge and positive impact not only to the country’s industrial relations management but equally create a conducive environment where the ministry will fully discharge only Labour matters allowing the Cabinet Secretary to concentrate on the same,” Cotu secretary-general Francis Atwoli said.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko also thanked the President for giving him the honour to serve the country as a Cabinet Secretary.

“Ahead of the vetting process, I confirm my readiness to serve in the appointed portfolio. I further do commit that I shall unreservedly be of service to this country in our national quest to advance the national environmental and forestry resources management agenda,” he said in a statement.

Similarly, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has congratulated the President for appointing a broad-based Cabinet and described the nominees as people of strong character and wide experience in their respective fields.
