Jubilee will not field candidates in Ugenya, Embakasi by-elections

Jubilee Party will not field any candidate in the forthcoming by-elections in Ugenya and Embakasi South constituencies.
In a statement, the party Secretary General Raphael Tuju said the decision was reached after a wide consultations.
“After wide consultations, the Jubilee Party leadership has decided that it shall not be fielding candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary by elections in Ugenya and Embakasi South Constituencies,” Mr Tuju said.
Mr Tuju also said the decision was informed by the spirit of furthering the steps of constructive engagements with the other main parties engaged in the contest and with an eye on the bigger picture.
“So soon after a very divisive electoral period just a year ago, the party is acting in the best interest of various initiatives that will reduce political tension in the country,” Mr Tuju said.

The two parliamentary seats fell vacant after the Supreme Court on December 21, 2018, nullified the August 8, 2017 election of MPs Christopher Karan (Ugenya) and Julius Mawathe (Embakasi South) on grounds that they were not validly elected.
Former Ugenya MP David Ochieng, who lost by about 200 votes, successfully challenged the victory of Mr Karan while Mr Sumra petitioned against Mr Mawathe’s election.
The by-elections for the two constituencies will be held on April 5.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has set aside February 4 and 5, as dates when parties will conduct their nomination exercise and appointed its returning and deputy returning officers for the by- elections.
