A meeting between Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Machakos governor, Alfred Mutua, on Saturday sparked speculation over possible political ceasefire between the two leaders.

Their meeting at the Karen Community Church in Nairobi where they both attended the wedding of Robert Kibwana, son of Makueni governor, Kivutha Kibwana, was the first since Dr Mutua’s election was nullified by the Court of Appeal.

The two had a hearty discussions with Governor Mutua saying they had agreed to meet “for a cup of tea” next week in what seems to be signs of reconciliation between them.

CHATTING HAPPILY

Dr Mutua has since appealed the nullification of his election at the Supreme Court but political temperatures in Machakos are on the rise as the county anxiously awaits the court ruling.

The meeting is significant because, the Governor’s political rival for the last two elections, Wavinya Ndeti, and who successfully petitioned his election, enjoys the full backing of Mr Musyoka, her party leader.

The Governor, who heads the Maendeleo Chap Chap party, posted several pictures of him dancing and chatting happily with Mr Musyoka on his Facebook page with comments that they enjoyed moments of laughter as they discussed life.

DOWNPLAYED MEETING

“It was great to reconnect with H. E. Kalonzo Musyoka. We enjoyed moments of laughter as we discussed life and agreed to call each other this coming week to find time to share a cup of tea” Dr Mutua said.

He added that, as leaders, they must actively agitate for political tolerance, stability and real unity so as to create a conducive environment for development and economic growth.

However, Ms Ndeti’s running mate in the last elections, Peter Mathuki, downplayed the meeting, saying people should not read anything political in the “mere bumping into each other” of the two leaders.

JOINED FORCES

As the county awaits the final outcome of the dispute, the political dynamics are fast-shifting, with each camp seeking to take advantage of the situation whereas Dr Mutua serving his final term.

Last week, Dr Mutua reached out to Mr Musyoka, asking that he considers to work with him to accelerate development for the common interest of the people of Machakos.

Dr Mutua said that, since they were both supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four agenda and fight against corruption, it was only logical that they joined forces for posterity.
