Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to suspend the 16 percent value added tax on petroleum products following public outcry.

Governor Mvurya said the tax is adversely affecting Kenyans.

"In the one week we have witnessed the suffering of Kenyans as a result of the increase in fuel prices after introduction of the value added tax of 16 percent, and we are requesting President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene," he said on Friday at Kenya Red Cross branch offices in Mvindeni.

He urged the government to explore alternative ways of raising revenue that do not overburden ordinary Kenyans.

Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary-General Abbas Gullet gave out business start-up kits worth Sh3.3 million to 23 youth groups.

Mr Mvurya said his administration will remain steadfast and committed to solving social vices such as youth radicalisation.

"Kenya Red Cross has been one of our key partners in implementing various strategies that promote economic growth among our youth," he said.
