Two women were on Thursday morning lynched and another seriously injured by villagers who accused them of practising witchcraft.
The rowdy villagers of Kiabiraa and Eronge in Nyamira North District in western Kenya played a hide and seek game with police as they invaded homes of suspected witches and slashed them with machetes before setting them on fire.
“The mobs overwhelmed the police as they were attacking one village after the other,” a villager who did not want to be named said.
Mrs Francisca Okemwa, 46, was killed and her body burnt in Kiabiraa village as her husband, Mr Meshack Okemwa, watched.
The second victim was not immediately identified. She was killed at Magonga area.
Mrs Marinda Mosomi was slashed but was rescued by police. She was admitted to Nyamira district hospital in a critical condition.
Trouble started after Mr Omandi Gisore, 45, was allegedly abducted from outside his brother’s house the previous night and taken through macabre rituals.
He was found Thursday morning outside his home but he could not speak. He is said to have listed the names of those who allegedly kidnapped him.
Among those he listed are his brother’s wife, the slain Francisca.
But Mr Okemwa denied that his wife was a witch and said he did not know when his brother was abducted. Most of those on the list were on the run.
