Helb fines are unfair to unemployed graduates

Saturday September 10 2016

While Kenyans are still excited about reduced interests rates, the Higher Education Loans Board continues to fine unemployed youth Sh5,000 a month on top of the agreed interest rate for failing to clear their loans after university studies.

This is ironical since Helb, unlike commercial banks, is a non-profit government body set up with taxpayers’ money to make education affordable.

Apart from being too steep, the monthly fines are also illegal in the sense that they were not in the initial fine print of the loans.
