Athletics Kenya has picked Team Kenya for the Africa Cross Country meet on March 17 in Algeria, following explosive National Cross Country Championships in Nairobi.
With the dust yet to settle at Uhuru Gardens, the AK will also select the team to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, at Kasarani, from Friday.
We wish the cross country team all the best in Algeria, as the Kenyans line-up to defend their individual and group titles.
We also hope that a strong team will be chosen to ensure that Kenya tops the athletics medal table in the Commonwealth Games from April 4-15.
Even though there is enormous talent, our athletes tend not to take these two championships seriously, with some stars skipping trials for the Africa Cross Country and the Commonwealth Games.
A marathon team that has been picked has been criticised as weak after only a few athletes confirmed participation, with the AK doing little to encourage strong entries.
There is a need for the AK and managers to ensure that athletes take part in these events.
The Commonwealth Games Federation intends to make this competitive, with qualifying events for the 2022 Birmingham, England, Games.
While we saw some new talent emerge in the cross country championships, these youngsters need to fight and earn their places in the team.
