Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) women’s volleyball team coach Vernon Khayinga has heaped praise on his new recruits after their impressive performance in the opening leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation league at Bungoma Airstrip grounds in Bungoma on Friday.

KCB beat debutants DCI 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 21-25 and 25-21) as the KVF women’s league served off.

Khayinga’s charges were impressive with their service and took the opening two sets before DCI recovered to win the third set forcing but KCB were too strong in the determining fourth set.

RAISED NEW RECRUITS

Khayinga was purring after the victory.

"It is a great victory for KCB. The six new players we recruited played well, and we now look forward to building on this victory in the remaining matches," said Khayinga.

The team started well, with captain Gladys Wairimu earning the bankers eight straight points for a 8-0 lead in the first set which they went on to take 25-19. The second set was a relatively easier affair for KCB, triumphing 25-16.

But DCI came back better prepared in the third set and capitalised on the home support to win 25-21.

The bankers, boosted by an improved back court defence and blocking, won the closely-contested fourth set 25-21. Pauline Nyongesa stood out for KCB in the fourth set with crucial blocks.

KCB, who are eyeing the local title and a place in the 2018 Africa Club Championship, now shift focus to Bungoma County volleyball tournament which served off on Saturday morning at the same venue.
