Kenya Defence Forces beat Nairobi County 16-8 to win the friendly boxing tournament at the City Stadium on Saturday.

Internationals Nick Abaka (light heavyweight), Nick Okoth (lightweight) and Edwin Okongo (middleweight) and fast-rising Isaac Meja (bantamweight) claimed victories in respective bouts to spur KDF to victory.

Mohammed Hussein of Nairobi claimed stunning victory against former international Simon Mulinge (KDF), who was forced to retire with a deep cut on his head in the flyweight contest.

Also to win for Nairobi were David Kanja and Joshua Maina in light flyweight and Lennox Okwanga and Joshua Isoti in light welterweight respectively.

The Boxing Association of Kenya (Bak) counties were using the tournament to prepare for the third leg of the National League due October 18 to 20 in Kongowea, Mombasa.

Abaka beat Francis Ndenga while Okoth, the 2011 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, edged out Stanley Ogutu on points in the tournament that was sponsored by Keroche Breweries, Coca Cola, Kentrack Entertainment and Nairobi County.

“I am glad to be back after I took a break because of some work duties,” said Okoth, who had to dig deep to beat the battling Ogutu.

Okongo silenced Tony Hongo to win the middleweight contest as Meja, who had a day earlier graduated from St Paul’s University, edged out Charles Macharia in their bantamweight bout.

“This marks a good return and I hope for a good show in the third leg having missed the first two legs because of studies,” said Meja.

Also in bantamweight, Vincent Magara of KDF beat Joseph Maina from Nairobi but Rafael Shigali pulled a fine victory for Nairobi against Dennis Mwendwa.

Nairobi had a good display in light flyweight, winning two bouts against KDF’s one as both teams level 2-2 in light welterweight. David Kanja beat Edwin Muthiru while Joshua Maina silenced James Kinungi in light fly where KDF’s Abednego Kyalo stopped Moses Ilavuka.

In light welter; Okwanga and Isoti were too good for Fredrick Omondi and Robert Githuka but Steve Onyango and Musa Gitonga turned on style to win for KDF, beating Pius Macharia and John Juma respectively.
