Friends School Kamusinga made clear their intentions of winning this year’s boys basketball title yesterday when they hammered St Georges of Mombasa Region 79-58 in their opening Pool A match as the Brookside national Secondary Schools’ Term One games kicked off at Shimo la Tewa School.

The Nzoia Region outfit however played a lousy game in the second half, which their coach Moses Khaoya attributed to the hot weather.

Kamusinga led 19-14 in the first quarter and 29-21 in the second for a 48-35 at the break. St Georges enjoyed possession in the third quarter which they won 15-14 but their opponents rallied to win the last quarter 17-7.

BELATED FIGH-BACK

Geoff Obuya scored for the victors with 14 points as James Mbugua  added another 10 points for Kamusinga. St Georges replied through Gordon Oyara’s 26 points and Henry Bosco’s 10.

Kamusinga coach Moses Khaoya said they had initially underrated St Georges especially in the opening minutes and almost paid the price for it.

“We were shocked by the late fight-back especially from their captain Gordon Oyara who almost killed the game but I am happy my boys kept their cool to take the match,” Khaoya said.

In the other match, Ambira Boys from Lake Region hit Mandera 146-1. After leading 37-0 in the first quarter, Ambira went ahead 29-0 then 43-1 in the third quarter before leading 37-0 in the fourth. Kez Hongo scored 47 points while Ochieng Obonyo had 26.
