Massive KDF, Police clear-out in Kisumu

Kenya Police and Kenya Defence Force (KDF) lived up to their billing as title favourites in Kisumu on Wednesday winning a majority of their bouts in the fifth and final leg of the National Boxing League.

Dennis Muthama of KDF treated the crowd at Ofafa Social Hall to the first knock-out win of the day in the flyweight category, when he landed a heavy blow on Kevin Akoko of Kisumu, sending him to the canvas.

Kenya Police's Maurice Ochieng used his superior reach to defeat tenacious Mohammed Hussein of Kibra in their flyweight fight despite being sent to the canvas in the second round.

Kombo Mwinyi of Kongowea eliminated Duncan Kamau of Githurai44 on points in a flyweight while Matayo Keya of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) won without throwing a punch after his opponent, Harrison Mathuku of Kenya Prisons failed to show up.

In the light weight category, Ethan Maina (Police) out-pointed John Mwanzia of G44, as Washington Wandera of KDF also won on points against Benson Kamau of Nairobi.

Michael Ochieng of Kongowea overwhelmed Edwin Hayo of KDF in welterweight to become the first boxer to outsmart the military men in Kisumu.

Boniface Mogunde of Police beat Henry Owino of Kisumu in the same category as did Mustafa Salim (OSKA) who knock-out Stephen Onyango of Prisons. Shaffi Bakari of Police overwhelmed Alex Orimba of Kisumu in the light-fly category, as Moses Kalavuka gave Prison's their first win of the day on points against Martin Maina of Thika in the same category.

Meanwhile, Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) will now go to polls on January 19.

The new dates were set after Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa received a report from a joint 12-man committee that he had formed to come up with the modalities of the elections.

The committee headed by Anthony “Jamal" Otieno and Kenneth "Kentrack" Otieno agreed to have all cases withdrawn from the Sports Dispute Tribunal and High Court.
