Kenya swimming team risk being banned from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after the International Swimming Federation (Fina) temporary suspended the Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) over management issues.

A statement from Fina Communications Department indicated that the global swimming body has temporary suspended the National Federations of Kenya and Federated States of Micronesia, until “proper elections are held in accordance with the Fina Rules.”

The move came following Fina Bureau Meeting in Kuwait City on Jamhuri Day under the presidency of Julio Maglione. The meeting coincided with the World Men's Junior Water Polo Championships.

The Kenya Swimming Federation was given until October 30 this year to stage its election amid continued issues in the sport in the country.

It was the second ultimatum given to the KSF by Fina, which had earlier set a deadline of June 30.

It means the countries will not be able to compete under their own flag at major FINA events.

KSF acting chairman Patrick Muyah laid the blame on the subcommittee on governance that is headed by Sanjeev Kangram for having been inactive.

“The committee was to review the constitution and come up rules governing elections but it has gone quite,” said Muyah. “The subcommittee has to put its house in order pretty fast.”
