What you need to know:

  • Winx broke the previous Australian tally of 25 straight strikes, set by legendary gallope, Black Caviar.
  • Winx also entered rare air by becoming just the 14th horse to cross the line first, 30 or more times in a career.

Australia's superstar, Winx (Hugh Bowman 1-5), returned to her spotlight on Saturday, at Royal Randwick.

The mighty mare, recorded her 26th consecutive win in the Group 1, $500,000 Winx Stakes (1400m).

She broke the previous Australian tally of 25 straight strikes, set by legendary gallope, Black Caviar.

The seven-year-old, was a raging favourite to win the weight-for-age event named in her honour, and she didn’t disappoint.

Additionally to breaking Black Caviar’s record, Winx also entered rare air by becoming just the 14th horse to cross the line first, 30 or more times in a career.

Winx was settled among the pack for much of the race but, as she’s done so often, suddenly exploded, showing the acceleration that’s made her so special. She won by a couple of lengths from Invictus Prince.

Trainer Chris Waller teared up as he reflected on the spectacular Queen of 'down under.' just what must it be like to own the classiest horse on earth?

Peter Tighe of Magic Bloodstock Racing, co-owner of Winx with Richard Treweeke and Debbie Kepitis, described the unique feeling.

Tighe said: “I'd go anywhere for a horse race but when you own a horse like her it's like we're standing in a different place looking at someone else's horse.

The challenge is now for someone else to come along and emulate what she's done.”

Winx's record-breaking achievements will be celebrated with her image on a A$1 postage stamp available from next week, and Tighe emphasised the important part the public plays.

“The support she gets is incredible – it's a privilege on behalf of all the public. We want everyone to enjoy this as we do.”

Coincidentally, this 19th Group 1 success, came on the foal date of Black Caviar, who was born exactly 12 years earlier. She retired in 2013.
